Even Leeds would not be a permanent home, though. Tolkien enjoyed his new job and got along well with the head of his department, but when he learned about a vacant position at Oxford as professor of Anglo-Saxon, he applied. He was not nurturing high hopes; after all, he was young and still had limited experience. One month later, however, he received a letter from the college: he had been chosen for the prestigious job!
He moved to Oxford in 1925, and his family joined him the following year. By then, they had three boys: John, Michael, born in 1920, and Christopher, who was born in 1924 and named after Christopher Wiseman.
Edith was glad to move away from the pollution. And the family had suffered many problems since they moved to Leeds: Edith and the boys got measles, Michael had appendicitis, Ronald came close to death from pneumonia, and the house was robbed by thievesâapparently with the help of the maid. The Tolkiens were ready for a new start.
